Irish Emigrant Children Draw Pictures of Their New Homes
Ireland has long been know for its history of emigration. The economic down turn has meant many families uprooting and settling in foreign countries around the world.
Although the emigrant population is usually dominated by people of a working age, Census 2011 showed an increase in people in younger and older age groups who migrated.
The number of children emigrating under 14 increased by 49.7%, up to 78,000 from 52,500 while people over 65 increased by almost 27% to 19,200, up from 15,100.
The Irish Times recently asked children who had emigrated to draw pictures based on their experiences of moving abroad. This video shows a slideshow of all the entries:
