Image of the Day: blue whales from the air

Our Image of the Day comes from the Irish Air Corps, who spotted some Blue and Fin Whales just below the surface last week and took some amazing photos!

The Irish Air Corps spotted some rarely seen Blue and Fin Whales approximately 80 - 100nm SW of Mizen Head on 06th Sept 2012. The CASA fixed wing aircraft was on a standard Maritime Patrol at the time. It is reported that there were several whales in the area.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group were close by in their vessel the 'Celtic Mist'.
