Long before Facebook check-ins, before The Spire, and even before mobile phones, there was one simple method for people arranging to get together in Dublin – 'I'll meet you under Clerys' clock.'
The reaction to the Gordan Brothers purchasing the department store, which went into receivership last night, has been one of relief tinged with a sadness to see the store fall out of Irish ownership:

Clerys had a ballroom. The pianist with the resident band was John Reidy. He became much better known when he changed it to Seán Ó Riada.
