Learn how to speak like a local Dubliner - Dublinese lessons at ABSOLUT Fringe
Posted at 20:17 Tue 18th Sep 2012 IST
My Fair Mot is genuinely one of the ABSOLUT Fringe shows I've been really looking forward to and have high expectations of.
"Speak with a proper Dublin accent.
Pronounce 'Story bud', ‘bleedin rapid' or 'Howya me Aul flower', like a true Dub.
’My Fair Mot’ is an interactive class taught by two local Dublin kids. Intercultural dialogue has never been so much fun.
Theatre director Eléonore Nicolas won festival audiences over both in 2009 with A Spoonful of Silence and in 2011 with MaDam and returns to ABSOLUT Fringe 2012 with something truly original and interactive: My Fair Mot, giving a series of Dublinese classes taught by two local Dublin kids for anyone who’d like to speak like a proper Dub and blend into the Fair City."I'm personally fascinated by the Dublin accent so this show could be made for me. I've just spoken with Eléonore Nicolas who gave me some background and advice.
Eléonore is a theatre director from Northern France who has lived in Ireland for over 12 years. She was working with local children at the Whitefriar Community Centre at Aungier Street, Dublin 2 on various theatre events at Hallowe'en and Christmas but found she couldn't understand what they were saying - she'd ask them to repeat once or twice but they'd get fed up and give up.
She then decided to ask them to teach her how to say different things (like in the video above) and between herself and fellow artist Fiona Dowling, they had six classes with local children every Monday to teach them to speak like locals.
They decided to share that with the world.
"It's exactly like learning a new language" says Eléonore, "These classes are probably more for foreigners than for locals. Learning hoe to speak this way has helped me plant my roots here. I've even started speaking Dublinese to my boyfriend."
People coming to the class are advised that the more you interact with the children, the more you'll get from the class.
I'm really looking forward to it.
