It seems that the Irish-born boss of Australia's flag carrier Qantas isn't a fan of Ryanair's choice of airports for some of its European routes.

One of the most common criticisms levelled at the no-frills Irish carrier is that some of its airports are more than walking distance away from the cities which they serve.

But Alan Joyce appeared to pay his Ryanair counterpart a backhanded compliment when it was suggested by the Premier of New South Wales that Canberra be used as Sydney's second airport.

He told Australian media: 'I don't think even Michael O'Leary from Ryanair would have had the gall to claim Canberra was the second Sydney airport – he makes outrageous calls on airports around the world.'

Barry O'Farrell favours using the capital's airport by connecting it to Sydney with a high-speed train line, while the Qantas CEO wants a site at Badgery's Creek just outside Sydney to be developed.

Alan Joyce added that Barry O'Farrell was 'wrong on this and we all know he is wrong on this'.
