Irish Mining Firm Closer to Striking Gold in Co Wicklow
Story by Dave Molloy
An Irish mining company is poised to strike gold in Wicklow after their first exploration produced “encouraging results.”
Connemara Mining Company, who began prospecting for gold in the region in April announced today that their first survey of the area completed earlier in the summer showed features consistant with high gold content.
The areas the company believes may contain gold include Tombreen, Knocknalour, Carnew and Clohamon, around the Wicklow-Wexford border.
They said the next step is to conduct a “follow-up ground-based exploration programme” which will take place over the next few months.
The town of Avoca in Wicklow was at the centre of a gold rush in the late 1700s and 1800s, during which thousands of ounces were mined. The main source of gold in the region has never been discovered, and has been sought by several prospectors over the years.
The recent rise in the price of gold has made prospecting work a potentially valuable business.
Connemara Mining Company has a partnership with Hendrick Resources, an exploration company with offices in Kildare and Toronto. Hendrick carried out the magnetic, electromagnetic and radiometric survey to identify these areas.
