The Dineen Dictionary is regarded as one of the most important dictionaries for Irish language speakers in the country. Dating back to 1904 the dictionary was born out of an idea by Kerryman Patrick Stephen Dinneen, an Irish lexicographer and historian.

It's still used widely across Ireland today as a key resource for Irish language learners but some of the words and descriptions in it are a bit unusual. 

Here are 16 words that we're come across that might not make too much sense if they were used today and their exact descriptions from the dictionary:


1. Aindeiseoir

Description: An unfortunate person or thing

Pronounced: An-desh-oar or ang-desh-oar


2. Dradairín

4. Allait

Meaning: A term of opprobium applied to a heavy, ungainly woman
