The Irish animation industry has been creating international buzz for quite some time. Mini-series and unique animated films have had international success and gained worldwide critical acclaim. From ‘Granny O’Grimm’ to ‘The Secret of Kells’, this week we take a look at some of the best in Irish animation.

This video gives you a glimpse into the magic of Irish animation. It features clips from some of Ireland’s most celebrated animators including: Cartoon Saloon, Brown Bag Films, JAM Media, Caboom, Kavaleer, Boulder Media, Magma and Monster Animation.

Brown Bag films have been leading the way for Irish animation companies worldwide. Their 2011 showreel shows you some of their most recent work.

This video by Brown Bag films is based on original recordings taken by Peig Cunningham in Dublin schoolrooms from the 1960’s. ‘Give Up Yer Aul Sins’ tells the story of John the Baptist, told as only children can. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short at the 2001 Oscars.

Oscar-nominated film of ‘Granny O’Grimm’ was directed by Nicky Phelan and produced by Brown Bag Films in 2008. The IFTA-winning short film features Ireland’s bitterest Granny telling the tale of Sleeping Beauty to her small grand-daughter.

Boulder Media, an animation company based in Dublin, recently won an award at the Children’s BAFTAs for work in ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’. The show follows the adventures of Gumball, a 12-year-old cat, and his family and friends. Have a look at a clip from the show below.

This quirky creation comes from David Quin, a Tipperary-based animator and filmmaker, who uses stop animation of comical figurines to create political satire. Have a look as Jedward talk to us about the 2011 Presidential campaign…
