Short Film Captures Hopes and Fears of Irish Diaspora
As young Irish people head off to disparate locations around the world in hopes of better opportunities, their connection to their homes seems to remain strong. The short documentary paints a portrait of modern emigration through interviews with young people who have made Toronto their home away from home. The documentary made its debut as part of the Toronto Irish Film Festival.
According to the filmmakers “This short documentary creates a tapestry of the Irish diaspora and subtly highlights the fears and hopes of those calling the city their new home.”
Both of the filmmakers were born in Ireland and both moved to Canada in 2011. Barbara Deignan was born in Leitrim, schooled in Galway, and worked for a time in Dublin before emigrating. She now develops shows at the Guru Animation Studio in Toronto. Director Cian McDevitt studied film and television at GMIT before starting his career at Screen Scene Post Production in Dublin. Since moving to Toronto, McDevitt now works for boutique edit facility Bijou Editorial Incorporated.
