Not much has changed when it comes to the St. Patrick’s Day parades tradition. The floats might be bigger and boast bolder colours but the general sentiment remains the same.

Many of those who are proud to be Irish, at home and abroad, love to march on Paddy’s Day, flying the flag for their clubs, counties or organisations.

Here we take a look back at some St. Patrick’s Day parades from down through the years.

Lovely footage of the New York City Parade from 1954, which was watched by some 2 million people and featured a huge glittering harp, pipers and Irish wolfhounds.

Tractors and all in this 1964 parade in Ireland.

Near blizzard conditions didn’t halt this New York City parade from 1967, which features Senator Robert Kennedy.

St Patrick is the main feature of this parade in Syracuse, New York from 1984.

A prayer for peace started the parade in Waterford city in 1990.
