Did you know that in 1932, a mock medieval fortress was planted right smack in the middle of Dublin City Centre? This photo, taken that year, shows the round tower looking very out of place in the middle of College Green. So what was it doing there, and where has it gone?

The ‘medieval’ fortress is actually a folly, designed for the special occasion of the Eucharistic Congress, which was held in Dublin in 1932. According to Colm Moriarty from IrishArchaeology.ie, this may not have been the only one. “It was a temporary structure constructed for the 31st International Eucharistic Congress, in 1932, which commemorated the 1500th anniversary of the mission of Saint Patrick to Ireland,” said Moriarty. “Apparently there was also a second round tower in the city as well, but I’m not sure where.”
