Photochrom Images Show Radiant Ireland of Early 1900s
The Library of Congress has an exceptional collection of Photochrom Images from Ireland taken between 1890 and 1900, that were recently highlighted on the Mental Floss blog here. We’ve brought together some of our favorites for you to enjoy. An earlier story here shows a video of additional images from the collection, and the full set of images can be found here. Does the image above of the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge look familiar? That’s because it’s still in use today, but luckily it looks like some serious improvements have been made.
The stunning snaps include landscape shots as well as some familiar images of recognizable spots in Dublin. According to the Library of Congress, “Like postcards, the photochroms feature subjects that appeal to travelers, including landscapes, architecture, street scenes, and daily life and culture. The prints were sold as souvenirs and often collected in albums or framed for display.”
