Wexford Cyclist at Mid Point of 17,000 Mile Journey
A young Gorey man is midway through a 17,000-mile bicycle journey covering the length of North, South, and Central American.
Ian Lacey’s 350South journey will take him the length of the Pan American highway, from Alaska to Argentina in one year.
Lacey is entering the final leg of his journey as he gears up to take on South America in the coming days. Yesterday, he posted photos of his journey through Costa Rica and Argentina.
Throughout his journey, Lacey is raising money for the Irish Carer’s Association. According to Lacey, the heat of Central America was often overwhelming. Here, he takes a break from the sweltering temperatures
The now solo Lacey is also quick to connect with other travelers on the road. He met 60-year-old Steve from Birmingham on the road to Uvita. Every year, Steve travels somewhere new for half a year on the bicycle, taking on South America, Asia, Central America, and next up is Africa.
Here, Lacey waited out a two-hour tropical rainstorm on the side of the road. At least it offered a bit of respite from the heat.
He shared some of his quirky stories from the trip along with his photos.
“I took a small boat from Montezuma to Herradura, Costa Rica,” he said. “On the way the captain caught sardines by the bucketful in the choppy waters.”
Near Montezuma, Lacey faced flooded roads on several occasions as seen in the photo below:
Here is Lacey entering the final country in the Central American leg of his journey.
The scenery on this leg of the trip is a far cry from the conditions Lacey experiences at the beginning. Here he is pictured with cycling partner Lee Saville. The pair travelled together from Alaska to Baja California, but parted ways for the remainder of the trip.
