WorldIrish brings Irish people and people who love Irishness together in one place. On WorldIrish people can connect with other members, share their stories, photos, videos and events, and find out what's happening in their Irish world wherever they are around the globe. WorldIrish is not just for Irish people, but for anyone who has an affinity with Ireland or Irishness.
No. This is an inclusive, people-centered initiative. We welcome everyone who has an affinity or interest in Ireland and Irishness.
All you need to join WorldIrish is your email address and your real name. You can then choose to add more information if you like as you build your profile on the site. We ask that you confirm your email address once registered so that we can authenticate the account.
Members of WorldIrish can create a profile, put themselves on the WorldIrish map, connect with other members all over the world, write and read stories, share and watch videos and photos, and organise and find events.
WorldIrish was founded by John McColgan (Producer and Director of Riverdance). Seeing the importance of gathering Irish people and those with an interest in Irishness in one digital place, he presented it as an idea at the first Global Irish Economic Forum in Farmleigh. Initially it started out as a foundation (Gateway Ireland) and held a conference called Connecting the Dots but in the current economic climate a foundation structure was simply not viable and it was determined that WorldIrish would need to stand on its own two feet as a sustainable enterprise. It is currently funded by John and a small group of investors.
The main WorldIrish base is in Gateway House, Capel Street, Dublin 1, but we have journalists in London, New York and Sydney.
The 16 values were deduced from a variety of sources with the intention of creating a breadth of options that could reasonably encompass the scope of values within any cultural identity. The scope of choices range from individuality to community and practicality to imagination.
It's a social site – where people can interact through stories, events and things that matter to them. WorldIrish is one big network. Unlike other social networks you can't create networks within it.
You can read them here.
When you + someone you will receive updates when they share a story, photo, video or event. They will be notified that you have added them.
Yes, you can search people, stories and events on WorldIrish, either through the map or the search bar in the navigation bar at the top of the WorldIrish page.
If you are a member of WorldIrish you can send a private message to another member.
We will only present stories and members to you that we think you will be interested in. As you "like" stories and members we will add that to your interests and present more of that to you.
In your setting page you can remove interest, change them or make them more relevant to you.

WorldIrish are the custodians of the @Ireland account, selecting voices or curators. Each week a new person curates the account. The people who curate the account and tweet from are strong, interesting voices either in or from Ireland. We were inspired by @sweden who started a very similar project in December. We hope it gives people around the world a new perspective on Ireland.
We were approached by Bernie Goldbach at the start of 2012. He had created the account back when Twitter first began. We're very grateful to Bernie. He wanted to do something with the account for many years and when he learned about WorldIrish he thought it was the right organisation to be its custodian of it so he gave it to us.
Send us an email to [email protected] outlining what you would do if you were curating @Ireland for a week. You can also nominate someone who you think would make an interesting curator. Learn more about it here.
