Dissecting/ Analyzing/ Discussing Into The West
I do not usually get very bothered or ‘emotional’ when it comes to watching films. However, I recently watched “Into the West,” a superbly, epically phenemonally brilliant film, which Gabriel Byrne(actor) was the assistant producer on besides acting in it as the character ‘Papa Reilly”. Which also starred the very lovely and talented and now unfortunately his ex-the ever still brilliant and I daresay most likely the reason behind Gabriel’s wearing of that Claddagh ring-Ellen Barkin-besides of course he most likely wears it for those other two reasons…his kids the love he bears for them and so that he always remembers that place he came from-which although he goes back there to film, since he lives in New York more permanently so, to remind himself and others’ that he is from Ireland and will never fully be although he has lived in New York for so long now-an ‘Irish-American’ but that he is a pure Irish brogue!
*Le sigh!*
Many could only ever feel so small when trying to compare themselves to thee Gabriel Byrne. Anyways, back to that lovely remarkable tremendous film that has become lodged into my memory and waking me up today at 3:33am being stuck in my head until I write about the film just to get everything I thought of the film “Into the West,” out of my head. Honestly thoughts of “Into the West,” woke me up and then I cried for a moment-my stomach feeling in a knot. Listening to the soundtrack of the film “Into the West,” has since seemed to calm me. Anyways, hmm….where to begin…well when the film first opens the beautiful pure white horse running along the beach in the water-through the water…well, I found I learned where that one white horse logo came from-not the winged White horse….there was another company-I feel forgetful as I write this….not remembering which company, used the white horse running along the beach galloping through the water.
Then, the whole substory about underneath the kids running away with a
‘magical’ horse-the one about the mum being the horse because Papa
Reilly did not set her ashes free-that plot in and of itself is a great
one to have intertwined into the original bigger plot as well as the
third plot about the whole Celtic traveling in the blood genes-that was
another fantastic point to have brought up in “Into the West.” I loved
the whole idea when it was suggested that the mum be the horse which had
returned to the sea in the end-and especially after Papa Reilly in the
end had set her ashes free by burning-in a traditional burial her
caravan. I loved the fact that the horse took them all the kids and Papa
Reilly to places where the mum had been for all of them to by the end
of the film have worked out their own personal issues and by the end of
the film Papa Reilly had come so far from the beginning where he was
just a drunk ass broke fool. To-at the end of the film he was even more
lovable!((I mean even as the drunkard broke ass fool-who could n-not
still love Gabe
)) Which then brought me into another reality-and I think somewhere
along watching the film-I connected to Gabe’s life since he has said
numerous times that to the extent that “acting is a truth.”
I came to connect the film back to Gabe…the whole them and the character of Papa Reilly(whom did have some of those problems which Gabe did struggle with for a bit as well-the whole ‘drink’ problem and being out of work.) Then Papa Reilly was depressed through most of the film until he found his roots going back to the travellers-and Gabe did go through that horrible period of his life(which because depression I do not think ever fully leaves oneself completely-which I ‘think’ he may…lapse into ocassionally.) Hmm…continuing on,…a bit more as to how I connected Gabe’s life to “Into the West,” still more connection with his character-well other than although older now-still such an Irish brogue, hmm…I think that ‘Celtic traveling blood’ may well be another true thing-and I think in terms of perhaps all with a bit o’ Celtic in them I think there is some sort o’ a traveling fighting spirit connected to those who have some sort o’ Celtic blood in them-which may be one reason for his divorce from Ellen Barkin which he most likely-Gabe could have felt too tied down-and possibly…maye…he did not feel as though he was ‘good enough’ for Ellen.
Anyways, okay going back to the film now for a moment–near the end of the film when Ossie was in the lake-or ocean drowning…when he saw his mum’s hand for a moment and grabbed it-when it turned out that the mum had indeed been the white horse. I had, had a moment to myself-a sort of change within myself a transcendence-transcendental moment-and for some unexplainable reason I bawled a good deal and through my tears of I think sadness and happiness and a ‘familiarity’….I was able to recall the fact that I had seen “Into the West” such a long time ago-since I’m 22, I’d say maybe like five or six-I remember the film playing on my television and I it was on that scene and I was ‘stuck’ watching it-fascinated by just the clarity of the water-by the again I think ‘familiarity’ the ‘magical’ feeling to it as Ossie is saved by an ‘entity’ that of his mum which he sees for a moment before he is saved by his now awesome superb father Papa Reilly.
Then back to Gabe’s life–I noticed as the credits to “Into the West,” went by…a ‘hauntingly’ familiar name Aine O’Connor as a ‘reporter’ and I found my thoughts whirring with bits of the RTE interview which Miriam had with Teri Hayden(Gabriel’s agent) and Gabriel himself and I remembered that Aine(I think one of Gabe’s forever loves-another reason which I think may be another why he keeps his Claddagh ring on always-though I remembered Aine and Gabe had, had something so remarkable there together if not for the fact that she had sadly died :’(…that was sooo sad to hear in the interview….I did cry about that-actually that RTE interview-moved me that “Heaven” song I bawled….) Anyways, I think “Into the West,” had a huge impact on Gabriel. I think that “Into the West,” is almost like a ‘full circle’ for Gabriel.
Then, just….do not…get me started on the soundtrack to “Into the
West,” PATRICK DOYLE….PATRICK DOYLE…..HARRY POTTER PATRICK
DOYLE…>>>>ERAGON PATRICK DOYLE….THEEE FECKIN BLOODY
BRILLIANT PATRICK DOYLE!! **K-E-R-P-L-U-N-K-S** . . .let’s just say I am
now still crying at memories of scenes from “Into the West,” and it is
only with thanks to thee Patrick Doyle!
Oh and don’t get me started on the fact that BRENDEN GLEESON was also
in the bloody film because I may just go from an “Into the West,”
tangent/slight film review which by the way it is BLOODY BRILLIANT to
say once more-but I may just end up going in the way of a HARRY POTTER
tangent just knowing that Potterites are in “Into the West,” well namely
Brenden Gleeson and the ever so talented musically driven Patrick
Doyle-or I could go off into a Star Trek tangent since well Colm
Meaney…. ;p….**Bows outta there-Runs away in a trail of dust**
