Seachtain na Gaeilge, a two week long festival of all things Gaeilge (Irish) kicked off today. Irish people around the world were getting in on the action, tweeting in the Irish language. Even Ireland football manager Giovanni Trapattoni got in on the fun. Running from March 5 through 17, SnaG hosts a series of events including concerts, lectures, cabaret and even bingo in Irish throughout the country. A full list of events can be found here.

According to the Seachtain na Gaeilge website:

The festival has built up incredible momentum in recent years, becoming the largest celebration of our native language and culture held in Ireland every year and sweeping other countries up in the whirlwind along the way. With events ranging from simple conversational evenings to street céilís; speed dating to wine tasting it gives everyone a chance to experiment with Irish whether fluent from youth or only dipping their toe in for the first time.

Twitter users took the chance to tweet in Irish as the festival began, using the hashtag #SnaG:

Seachtain na Gaeilge starts today, ends 17 Mar (níos mó ná seachtain amháin). An Bliain ó mBéarla, as usual, runs from 1 Jan to 31 Dec #SnaG

To coincide with SnaG, RTÉ has a new series promoting the use of the Irish language and encouraging people to have pride in their language, no matter what their skill level is. The Bród Club will see boxer Bernard Dunne reach out to the public to get 100,000 people to commit to using Gaeilge. According to RTÉ:

We believe there are people with a huge sense of latent pride in the Irish language, people who don’t use Irish but would like to. Is that you? This is not a learning series. It’s an appeal to show your pride, your “bród” in your language. However much or however little you have, use it. Use What You Have.
