Irish nanny charged with murder of baby girl in Boston

An Irish nanny has been charged with first degree murder in Boston following the death of a baby girl in her care last January.
Aisling McCarthy Brady, who is originally from Cavan but has been living in the US for 11 years, was arrested on 14 January after police responded to an emergency call at an address on Ash Street in the city.
Officers found 1-year-old Rehma Sabir unconscious inside the house with substantial injuries on her body. She died two days later in hospital from head injuries causing subdural and retinal haemorrhaging and cerebral swelling.
The 34-year-old nanny was initially charged with charged with assault and battery, however this was upgraded to a murder charge by a Massachusetts grand jury on Friday, following the completion of an autopsy on the infant's body.
'The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and ruled that the cause of death is blunt force head injuries, and the manner of death is homicide and not accidental,' prosecutors said in a statement.
The Cavan woman, who has been living in the United States illegally, had previously pleaded not guilty to the assault and battery charges. She faces deportation to Ireland if she is freed from state custody, according to the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
An arraignment date has not yet been scheduled.
