Irish nanny pleads not guilty to murder of baby girl in Boston court

Irish nanny Aisling McCarthy Brady has pleaded not guilty to the murder of a baby girl in her care at a court in Boston this afternoon.
The 34-year-old, who is originally from Co Cavan but has been living in the US for the past 11 years, choked back tears as the charges of murder, assault and battery against 1-year-old Rehma Sabir were read out during her brief arraignment hearing in the Middlesex Superior Court.
The infant was found unconscious by police responding to an emergency call at an address on Ash Street in the city on 14 January – her first birthday. Ms McCarthy Brady was arrested at the scene and the child was rushed to hospital.
She died two days later in hospital from head injuries causing subdural and retinal haemorrhaging and cerebral swelling.
The 34-year-old nanny was initially charged with charged with assault and battery, however this was upgraded to a murder charge by a Massachusetts grand jury on Friday, following the completion of an autopsy on Rehma's body.
The Cavan woman had been living in the United States illegally and faces deportation to Ireland if she is freed from state custody, according to the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
