A new scholarship scheme for international students worth over €10,000 per student has been launched by the Irish government to attract some of the top students from ‘priority markets.’

The scholarship scheme is aimed at final-year undergraduate or postgraduate students who want to study abroad.

The first group of 20 students have been awarded scholarships, coming from Brazil, China and India, while another 22 are planned for students from those countries and the United States this year.

Called the Government of Ireland International Scholarships, the scheme covers all tuition fees and registration charges, and also provides a €10,000 grant to cover living expenses for one year.

Tuition fees for one year of postgraduate study in an Irish university for non-EU residents can be very expensive. A M.Litt degree from Trinity College Dublin, for example, costs €8,800 in tuition fees, while an MBA in the university’s School of Business would set such students back €29,500.

The scholarship scheme was proposed in the Programme for Government in 2011 as a way to develop ‘cultural and diplomatic links with emerging markets’ and promote Ireland as a destination for international students – a market worth more than €1 billion each year to the Irish economy.
