About @Ireland

The @Ireland Twitter account rotates each week with a new voice introduced every Monday morning. As the Ireland of today is not confined to the island of Ireland, the varied voices of @Ireland come from Ireland and across the world.

Started in March 2012 and inspired by the @Sweden project, @Ireland is based around the idea that a single voice cannot represent a country. By sharing people's experiences and lives with the world, project custodians WorldIrish believe @Ireland can help to further connect Ireland to the world and the world to Ireland through the different voices that curate the account each week.

People can apply to be the voice of @Ireland for a week or can nominate a person they believe could represent Ireland. To apply or nominate someone email: [email protected]. If you are applying to curate @Ireland yourself please include the following in your email: your own Twitter account handle (username), your phone number and times/days that are convienient to contact you, a one-paragraph biog telling us about yourself and a 140-character description of why you would make a good @Ireland curator!

@Ireland Curator: Móna Wise

Móna Wise

23rd Apr 2012 to 29th Apr 2012

Returning home to roost in her native Galway after a stint of 15 years in America, Móna Wise is constantly tinkering with that tune there is no place like home. Heavily vetted in the hospitality industry, Wise worked as a wedding planner for ten years before she and her husband Ron (a chef) opened their first restaurant in Ohio. Long time members of the Slow Food movement they nurtured relationships with several local farmers and grew a large percentage of their own produce to sustain the daily-changing menu on offer. Wise and her husband chose to build their family by-way of local adoption. Shortly after the arrival of the children, the draw to be closer to her family in Ireland was fierce. In other words she missed her Mammy. In 2007 Wise and her family sold their restaurant and headed home. Once the children were enrolled in school, Wise enrolled in NUIG’s new BA-Connect program and is specialising in Creative Writing. Wise and her husband are also a foster family and offer respite care to several children and foster families during the summer months. Wise lives with her husband, four children, a puppy named Pearl, a cat named Pretty Kitty and an ever expanding flock of hens, ducks, turkeys and guinea fowl.

05:40 26th Apr 2012 - Link

The taste buds come alive, white pepper dong it's fine work. And once the coffees brewed, then I will feel the daily perk.

05:37 26th Apr 2012 - Link

@cataclysmicha - 4 kids under the age of 10... I rhyme in my sleep ;0)

05:37 26th Apr 2012 - Link

@sailvarmint - it is so quick/ez ... And my only regret is sharing it with the kids because now they EAT every bite! Fruit n' fish works!

05:34 26th Apr 2012 - Link

Although the coffee's brewing, and I'll drink my share of that.... A little bit of warm milk right now, with white pepper and full cream fat

05:32 26th Apr 2012 - Link

Good God it's cold in Galway, my cheeks are rosy red. I raced back from my walk this morn, wishing I had stayed in bed.

20:44 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@TanneryDungarva @len_patrick @rednosewine - there are 'rules' ... Can't talk about your 'business' etc. that stifled me a bit

20:41 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@TanneryDungarva @len_patrick @rednosewine - I am sure they will get back to you soon. You would be great! #itisnoteasythough!

20:21 25th Apr 2012 - Link

16:23 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@fiery_jennyrose - nothing like a cuppa on a dreary wet evening in Ireland!

16:09 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@noellarichard - this is more of a breakfast pudding and it is made from blood!

15:38 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@CaitrionaW - I have to say 'Gin is my tonic' during the summer. Nothing nicer than a few ice cubes dancing around my glass #WhereistheSun?

15:32 25th Apr 2012 - Link

Ok . . . still a bit of time left to finish our work for the day folks .... pic.twitter.com/Bu3eqzMV

15:22 25th Apr 2012 - Link

15:11 25th Apr 2012 - Link

14:56 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@fhayesmccoy - I know. 'tis my weakness too. Great apple & blueberry pie... a step up from the average tart ..

14:55 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@SimplyConor - I am but a humble house cook. My husband is a chef/baker so we must give credit where credit is due.

14:53 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@ZwartblesIE - when you come to Galway I will make you pie and a cup of tea. It is the least I can do ...

14:16 25th Apr 2012 - Link

14:03 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@robby4841 - and truth be told - pastry maker I am not, but I am a dab hand at opening wine bottles #doesthatmakemealush?

13:30 25th Apr 2012 - Link

12:18 25th Apr 2012 - Link

10:36 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@CaitrionaW - interesting ... You might be the only person I know that did not like it ;0)

07:17 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@courcelan - nope. I live out in the sticks - Claregalway side of town. Will go to Bridge street though after Spanish Arch and prom walk!

06:18 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@mkearley2008 @sailvarmint - 'armour on' and ready for battle I am. By 'armour' I mean my wet gear. There will be no dust in Galway today

06:05 25th Apr 2012 - Link

06:04 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@Gwen1854 - I have been to visit. I could easily live in Victoria x

06:02 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@mkearley2008 - ah shur a bit of rebel rousing might be no harm. Glad you liked the rhyme...

05:49 25th Apr 2012 - Link

And maybe I should be more controversial now ...? Liven things up a bit like... @mkearley2008 @sailvarmint

05:48 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@Gwen1854 - one of my B best friends lives in Victoria, and I have a brother in Vancouver. A gorgeous part of the world!

05:48 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@mkearley2008 @sailvarmint - I find, if I write a 'rhyme a day' before 7:00am each day I never use the 'writers block' excuse.

05:47 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@mkearley2008 @sailvarmint - the real poets out there work very hard on their craft. I just wake up 'rhyming'

05:46 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@mkearley2008 @sailvarmint - thank you, I am flattered. I like to think having four kids under the age of ten makes me a great 'rhymer' ;0)

05:45 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@carnsoreboxer - good morning to you too.

05:45 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@psneeze - no problem. I will set a few aside just for you! (we, maybe for me too)

05:44 25th Apr 2012 - Link

@_Marichka______ - mine too !

05:37 25th Apr 2012 - Link

And if there is something you'd like to see, from my hometown today. Then get your tweet in early so I can plan my day!

05:36 25th Apr 2012 - Link

Today I'll head to oceans shore, a few tweets from Atlantic's edge. I'll try to keep it interesting, this I solemnly do pledge.

05:34 25th Apr 2012 - Link

A storm is brewing somewhere, cold air against my face. A hurried walk this morning, increased my step and pace.

05:32 25th Apr 2012 - Link

Good morning Ireland from Galway, the wind is whipping up a feast. The skies are blue and pinkish, calm, before them release of beast.

20:42 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@David_Ruser - still no food trucks on the scene here. #amhopeful

18:41 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@David_Ruser - just noticed you are in Louisville, KY. I lived in Cincinnati, OH for 15 years. LOVE Lynns Paradise Café - best bloody marys

18:00 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@foxglovelane - hello! I am not a patch on you I am afraid.

17:59 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@David_Ruser - thanks so much David. I like taking photos and hope to improve greatly after I graduate from college #moretimetopractice

16:43 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - I love pinto beans too. Tesco (in Galway) just started carrying the dried ones. I am sure yours are much nicer.

16:37 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - Do you make your own chili spice mix? We do the same. Make a huge batch with beans in it and freeze it.

16:36 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@sailvarmint - Mango, crushed red chili flakes (habeneros will work) and lime juice and fresh coriander/cilantro. It is addictive.

16:34 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - one of my favorite dishes #cabbagerolls -

16:34 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - I LOVE MEXICAN food too. We are finally able to get some good ingredients in Galway for a right 'fiesta'. . .

16:33 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - cook in turkey broth (or chicken broth) for a couple of hours. Make tomato sauce mixed with sour cream ..

16:32 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - we use raw minced turkey (but pork/beef mince is fine), onions and cooked rice. Wrap in blanched cabbage leaves

16:28 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - Cabbage Rolls. Had salad for lunch. What are you eating tonight?

16:25 24th Apr 2012 - Link

Just back from a walk. Rain, hail, sunburn. Soaked to the skin and sunburnt. Kids are starving - what's for supper? pic.twitter.com/Ui94aYnR

12:10 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@CarlowCountyMus @VibrantIreland - honestly - with the chili and the lime juice it is very addictive. The salmon 'almost' takes a back seat

11:54 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@CarlowCountyMus @VibrantIreland - BEST is 'Fruit with Fish' . . . Mango, chili & lime salsa with pan seared salmon. pic.twitter.com/hW5A2IsM

11:52 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@CarlowCountyMus @VibrantIreland - Worst is eggs with mustard. I love mustard. It should have been fab. Tried a few different mustards too

11:48 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@ireland @CarlowCountyMus @VibrantIreland - I have a sixth sense about food pairings. I married a chef and do 'try' most creations ...

11:43 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@CarlowCountyMus @VibrantIreland - I will have to take your word for it. I do like peanut butter - and love scrambled eggs. But not together

11:41 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@MexicancookEire - good to hear Lily. I should be making something Mexican! The package arrived today - thanks!

11:40 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@watermusician - thanks. That was the iPhone shot. I am always surprised at how nice it looks after it uploads.

11:32 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@VibrantIreland @CarlowCountyMus - I feel the same way .... eeeewww #peanutbutterandscrambledeggs

11:27 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@CarlowCountyMus - hmmm. Can't say I have tried peanut butter with scrambled eggs. I am not sure how that would work. You gonna eat that?

11:16 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - I have come to terms with the fact that we just can't do it all. . . . Sounds like a fine meal to me either way!

11:07 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@beanobundle - at the minute I am enjoying the first 'break' from writing in 8 months. But just got a new job so have to start writing again

11:05 24th Apr 2012 - Link

OR maybe just a toasted cheese sambo . . . #lunch pic.twitter.com/MSQSoe3c

09:52 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@liamcredmond - a Bloody Mary then?

09:52 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@Det13Maria - yum indeed - and easy. Grate the horseradish root and add to marmalade. Sear chicken for a few mins, glaze and finish in oven

09:51 24th Apr 2012 - Link

Oh - and @liamcredmond - it should go without say that I love horseradish too. #ImaketheBESTBloodyMarys

09:50 24th Apr 2012 - Link

06:37 24th Apr 2012 - Link

06:22 24th Apr 2012 - Link

So if your out there watching, do stop by to say hello. I will be out back mucking out, the hen coops, don't ya know!

06:19 24th Apr 2012 - Link

Today I will relax and let the tweets and rhymes appear. No need feel a failure, nor the daily Tweets to fear.

06:17 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@jabit - exactly!

06:17 24th Apr 2012 - Link

So yesterday with all my tweets, I stumbled and I failed. My fear of boring tweets realised, I was blocked, my thoughts had bailed.

06:11 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@cathalkeogh - you too Cathal!

06:11 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@Jonathanwpurvis - a lovely day here. I am an early riser. Love how quiet the house is

06:10 24th Apr 2012 - Link

@jabit - lovely photo. Just heard the weather man say showers are on their way. I turned off the radio .. Nice and sunny here

05:54 24th Apr 2012 - Link

Now I am ready for coffee, black and fairly strong. I hope you're rested and ready for whatever this day will bring along.

05:53 24th Apr 2012 - Link

Good morning Ireland from Galway, our skies are baby blue. Young cat has had her milk feed, the dog's been walked here too.

20:08 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

So now the evening draws to close, The sun has set in West. Today did not go quite as planned, so tomorrow I'll bring my best.

18:04 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@TarquinDunwoody - it sounds very interesting indeed. And I am sure it was delicious.

17:54 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@shanda1701 - good for you. Plenty of growing room in a square foot!

17:37 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@Smartheat - Yep. We noticed when the kids were little that the more colour we loaded on the plate the more colour they ate #winwinforall

@TarquinDunwoody @newzealand - sounds good to me .. growing up in Galway we only ate salad during the warmer months -

16:30 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@EllieSilwer - well, grow a little catnip for the cat then ... #shareandsharealike

16:29 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@karenboconnell - I think we are waiting to plant our outdoor crops until May day Karen. Just incase there is a cold snap

16:28 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@newzealand - Growing salad greens can be done year round in Ireland. We do have a polytunnel - so in the winter there is some protection

16:26 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@EllieSilwer - sounds like a good plan. A bit of rosemary, thyme, oregano and mint for the mojitos, right?

16:23 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@newzealand - it is hard when you have no room to grow but getting a delivery must be nice too. My husband is a salad freak - everyday

16:19 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

@EllieSilwer - Why not Ellie? No garden?

16:15 23rd Apr 2012 - Link

I am never sure what we will have for dinner each day but there will always be salad ... do you grow your own food? pic.twitter.com/1kNkJrOy
