About @Ireland

The @Ireland Twitter account rotates each week with a new voice introduced every Monday morning. As the Ireland of today is not confined to the island of Ireland, the varied voices of @Ireland come from Ireland and across the world.

Started in March 2012 and inspired by the @Sweden project, @Ireland is based around the idea that a single voice cannot represent a country. By sharing people's experiences and lives with the world, project custodians WorldIrish believe @Ireland can help to further connect Ireland to the world and the world to Ireland through the different voices that curate the account each week.

People can apply to be the voice of @Ireland for a week or can nominate a person they believe could represent Ireland. To apply or nominate someone email: [email protected]. If you are applying to curate @Ireland yourself please include the following in your email: your own Twitter account handle (username), your phone number and times/days that are convienient to contact you, a one-paragraph biog telling us about yourself and a 140-character description of why you would make a good @Ireland curator!

Erin Murphy

6th Aug 2012 to 12th Aug 2012

Born and raised in Boston, where she worked happily in the corporate world, Erin quit her job, hugged her family & friends, and followed her heart to Ireland last year. Now living in Malahide, she is busy learning how to drive on the left, converting Fahrenheit to Celsius, and running the US Ireland Business Partnership. She loves Red Sox baseball and chocolate biscuit cake, and she always forgets her umbrella.

... At home, Sundays would be more of a stay-at-home / maybe run errands kind of day. Much less social. I'm a fan of the Irish Sunday!

14:18 12th Aug 2012 - Link

It may be my own experience, but it seems people in Ireland are more up for going for drinks / dinner on a Sunday than in Boston...

@chrisdaygalway enjoy your day as well.

09:29 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@chrisdaygalway terrible & sad. I personally am against all capital punishment. Not my intention to debate the issue through this forum tho.

@Claredaisy @sponsorie good idea not to just jump in with it! I made that mistake!

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@wordhoarding excellent point. I think relying on "what do you do" also made me a lazier conversationalist. I'm inspired to improve!

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

...I was shocked! Even at networking events, I shouldn't ask that question?? I saw it as a natural opportunity to get to know someone ...

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

... That by asking someone I just met what they did for a living, I was appearing intrusive and not interested in them as a person ...

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

... Someone new, the first thing I would ask is "what do you do?" Well I was quickly clued in by my Irish boyfriend (slash cultural attaché)

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@d_cahill that point was made to me as well - that I might appear too interested in what someone earns. Yikes!!! Not my interest at all!

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@xfirefishx It seems so natural to me!

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@deshocks glad it's not just the dopey Yank!!

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

09:10 9th Aug 2012 - Link

09:04 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@girl__friday i agree with your friend!! A new business contact asked me for my mobile last week and I balked!!

09:02 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@noelahogan good one!! Maybe that's what I should open with: Hi I'm Erin. I am not a revenue commissioner.

09:01 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@aoifacrowley I am much more sensitive to it now!!

09:01 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@suzybie it's a good point but it's not why I ask. I ask cuz it is a good way to get chat going w/someone new and I'm genuinely interested!

08:58 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@CyRevenant glad I'm not the only one!

08:57 9th Aug 2012 - Link

@suzybie that is understandable. I didn't fully appreciate the risk of someone feeling down or self conscious about their situation.

20:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@Julian_Lee76 I am still floored at how much Clinton is loved here, too. Thats not meant to be a judgment. He's just a rockstar here.

20:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@joeystrider your statement goes along with your photo. Love it!

20:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@not_hwa got it. Thanks for expanding. I think you're not alone there!!

20:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@Julian_Lee76 ... I can't see it ever changing. I get your point completely.

20:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@Julian_Lee76 system was under major scrutiny after George W's first election. If it wasn't changed after that protracted fight ...

@TymCon interesting observation!!

20:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@patricktornado @texastoasther the media is an important issue in all this. Sometimes hard to tell between fact from opinion in coverage.

@MargaretEWard @claireprior have to admire it, really.

19:56 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Am I wrong in saying the ideological / policy differences aren't that hugely different between Fine Gael & Fine Fail? Let me have it!!

19:11 8th Aug 2012 - Link

how ideologically similar the primary parties seem to be. In US, there are huge policy and philosophical differences between Dems & Repubs

19:09 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Warning: ignorant statement ahead. But one of the things that surprised me most about the Irish political party system was ...

18:36 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@Julian_Lee76 i think you're spot on

18:35 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@PatMcA two great spots. Disneyland for political junkies!! Enjoy!!

18:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

In addition, it's a presidential election year in the US. What do you all think about the coverage of the Obama and Romney campaigns? ...

18:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

This morning we asked our early birds about political campaigns. Ever worked on one in Ireland or US? See their stories & share your own!

18:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Are you following the US presidential race at all, are you waiting til October to pay attention, or are you not too bothered about who wins?

13:24 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@helpwithdebt amazing!!!

13:15 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Lump in my throat, tears in my eyes! #katietaylor #irishfansarethebest #fieldsofathenry

11:59 8th Aug 2012 - Link

“@dominickianno: @ireland I also learned its never good form to offer to show a moderator one's tattoo during a debate” hahahahaha

11:50 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@kencurtin @mdrn1 enjoy your hols!! No pressure whatsoever!

11:48 8th Aug 2012 - Link

... I give the candidate's partner a lot of credit. It takes a lots of strength and sacrifice to be the support system.

11:47 8th Aug 2012 - Link

... She was in the living room with their kids and extended family. They held each other and I could feel how they were true partners.

11:45 8th Aug 2012 - Link

11:05 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Former national & statewide political strategist @DominickIanno - welcome to the party! You must have a tale or two!?

10:11 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Well, Ken? :) “@MDRN1: @ireland Ask @kencurtin he'll talk for days about it. The master.”

10:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@unakavanagh @joeystrider @saoili that's too bad. Wasn't in SUs so was unaware. Would students have mentors w/ political expertise?

09:43 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@saoili @unakavanagh disappointing. That could turn someone off politics for good.

09:39 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@unakavanagh @saoili why is that?

09:34 8th Aug 2012 - Link

“@saoili: @ireland Does student politics count?” absolutely!!

09:26 8th Aug 2012 - Link

So much fun! “@spiller2: great morning swapping campaign stories with @ireland, great memories of past elections and random events!”

09:23 8th Aug 2012 - Link

So we're talking politics. A few great stories from campaign veterans! Who else has worked on a political campaign? Any favorite memories?

09:21 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 ha!!

09:16 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 imagine having the hutzpah to answer the door in your underwear?? I mean, is it confidence or complete I-don't-give-a-flip?

09:12 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 guts of steel!

09:12 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 film not great. Book amazing. You'll read it in 3 days.

09:11 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 ... And my "leaf drop" partner, across the road from me, was greeted by a man in his undies holding a gun. Earned my street cred!

09:08 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 on one particular street in a notoriously tough part of town, I was chased by a pitbull while the owner coaxed him on ...

09:05 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 it's about the 2008 US presidential election, but it's far more interesting / entertaining / relevant than many others.

09:04 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 definitely. The campaign was statewide, and MA has a similar population # to Ireland, so came across all kinds. The best & worst.

09:01 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 love it! Have you read Game Change? If not, you HAVE to. So good.

09:00 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 ha! Hopefully not likely in either place! But point taken. Freddy Kreuger was American after all.

08:58 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 ahh of course! :)

08:57 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 ... Ending up chopped into little pieces in someone's basement. Occupational hazards and what not.

08:56 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 fantastic. Door knocking was always my least favorite. Not sure which I was more afraid of ... Interrupting someone's dinner or ..

08:51 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 so cool! What's your particular area of expertise? Media guy? Grass roots? All around campaign genius?? :)

08:49 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@Conor_Dixon @spiller2 great points.

08:48 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@eddiewhyte for that campaign it was Massachusetts Governor Paul Cellucci. It was 1998 then. Great man to this day.

08:45 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 so I take it your a campaign veteran yourself?

08:44 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@chrisdaygalway I do understand (and that's not meant to be patronizing either!)

08:43 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@jacqs70 1) you have to be hard wired for it, 2) it teaches you what you are actually capable of 3) it's like camp for news junkies.

08:41 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@Conor_Dixon @spiller2 I would agree. Soft skills & hard. Team work, humility, organization, stamina, strategic thinking, discipline.

08:38 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@Jay29ers Loved that movie! But I watched it with someone who never worked on campaigns, and while I was all hyped up, he felt more cynical.

08:36 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@chrisdaygalway I was legitimately interested in ideas for the rest of the week! Sorry if it came off that way.

08:35 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@iandevlin I understand ur view. Lots of bad out there. Easy for us to become jaded, & rightfully so. I was lucky 2 work for some good ones.

08:32 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@spiller2 we had hundreds of volunteer staff, but yes, about 20 of us were paid employees of the campaign. (Campaign manager on down to me.)

08:31 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Campaign experience is like Vegas. 1) what happens there stays there, and 2) you never fully understand unless you've been there. :)

08:29 8th Aug 2012 - Link

After months of 16 hour days, 7 days a week, incl. a few nights of sleeping on the office couch, our candidate was elected Governor of MA.

08:27 8th Aug 2012 - Link

I loved every minute of it, even when I had to come clean about losing a Fed Ex package with a 1.5 million dollar check inside for TV ads.

08:26 8th Aug 2012 - Link

... Love affairs, screaming matches, drastic weight gain, drastic weight loss, amazing strategic thinking, and major tactical blunders.

08:25 8th Aug 2012 - Link

By the end of my first campaign (I was fresh out of college and the most junior of the paid staff) I had witnessed it all ...

08:23 8th Aug 2012 - Link

On political campaigns, I never worked so hard and got paid so little. A team of people passionately working on 1 goal: get your guy to win.

08:20 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@geckoinpdx drink 'Em up!

08:19 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@ISWAHbook cool!

08:19 8th Aug 2012 - Link

I've worked on 2 campaigns. Since then, I always love to talk to / hire / have pints with campaign veterans. It's like a survivors' club.

08:17 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@chrisdaygalway I understand your view. If you have any other suggestions for topics, I'm all ears! :)

08:16 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@jacqs70 glad you think so!

08:16 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@ISWAHbook question was: who would you most like to have dinner with?

08:14 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Anyone work or have worked in politics before? Be it at the national or local level? Campaigns or within administrations?

08:13 8th Aug 2012 - Link

... Most Americans are sleeping at the moment, so we might get started without them and catch them up later! First thing's first ...

08:12 8th Aug 2012 - Link

... Not necessarily a heated debate on political issues, but rather observations about Irish & US political cultures. The thing is ...

08:10 8th Aug 2012 - Link

Morning! I'm looking forward to touching on the topic of politics with you all today. Hearing views from both sides of the Atlantic...

04:06 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@rcav8r thanks Dave!

04:05 8th Aug 2012 - Link

@AhJayzis That's a Dunkin Donuts cup in your hand and I want it.

22:17 7th Aug 2012 - Link

22:11 7th Aug 2012 - Link

22:10 7th Aug 2012 - Link

@mkearley2008 no I worked for Gov Bill Weld & Gov Paul Cellucci. Left politics to work in private sector. Still a great love of mine tho!

22:10 7th Aug 2012 - Link

@M_Verloc no I worked for His predecessors: Gov Weld (in college) and Gov Cellucci (post grad). Loved the experience!

22:10 7th Aug 2012 - Link

@Markkipper the Fresh Prince himself!! Outstanding!!

22:10 7th Aug 2012 - Link

@achillgooner It's an election year in the US. Debate with a capital D! :)

22:10 7th Aug 2012 - Link

My dad is a political junkie, I Worked for two Mass Governors, and my brother currently works for a MA State Legislator. Runs in the fam!

22:10 7th Aug 2012 - Link

In fact, in Massachusetts, politics is considered a sport. Rivals baseball & football for favorite pastime.

22:10 7th Aug 2012 - Link

Thinking of talking US/Irish politics tomorrow. It's always a hot topic - if handled with respect for other views, it can be really fun.

22:10 7th Aug 2012 - Link

Welcome to all our new followers this week! Today's topics: 1- Olympics (who you're rooting for) & 2- celebrity sightings (who you've met!)

@Julian_Lee76 hey it worked. I was smitten. And shocked at how short he was!

19:27 7th Aug 2012 - Link

My first time in Ireland, I met Bono in a pub in Wicklow. He drew me a flower and wrote "Flower for Erin, Bono '94." I couldn't speak.

19:26 7th Aug 2012 - Link

@tim_brannigan stones of steel, my friend.

19:24 7th Aug 2012 - Link

Ok slight diversion. @Ireland follower @tim_brannigan just told me he got to meet (and kiss) Beyonce. Who has a fun celebrity tale to share?

@tim_brannigan just snort-laughed.

18:28 7th Aug 2012 - Link

... Reagan was president at the time fighting the Cold War, yet I was a kid with no notion about the political significance of the event ...

18:26 7th Aug 2012 - Link

Before Mary Lou, we hadn't a chance against Romania & the USSR. Eastern Europeans dominated gymnastics ... #London2012

18:24 7th Aug 2012 - Link

My favorite #London2012 event is women's gymnastics. I was 8 years old & totally in awe when Mary Lou Retton won Gold for USA in 1984.

Anyone visited or lived in Boston? What do you think? Were we friendly (I hope!) Any fave places or memories? Remind you of Dublin at all?

07:40 7th Aug 2012 - Link

Lots of Irish people I talk to have either visited Boston or lived there for a time. There is a huge Irish & Irish American population.

07:38 7th Aug 2012 - Link

@Conor_Kenny @bay10k I don't really monitor my time. I just focus on crossing the finish line. And I did. Barely. :)

19:33 6th Aug 2012 - Link

@KathOMeara hmm ... Maybe I will in time. Still love my ice!

19:32 6th Aug 2012 - Link

18:33 6th Aug 2012 - Link

@TomTDowling I never realized how Americans were considered fat by the rest of the world until I moved. Mixture of truth & Jerry Springer!

18:29 6th Aug 2012 - Link

@OfficialEoin yes, cost of health care is a major issue in the US. Didn't come up today, but speaking from experience it's a crucial issue.

18:28 6th Aug 2012 - Link

18:18 6th Aug 2012 - Link

... Hospitals, and social welfare systems. Some opined that in general, owning land/house has deeper meaning to the Irish than to Americans.

18:18 6th Aug 2012 - Link

Also, consensus was that Americans are fatter, have "posher" hospitals, and give leaner social welfare benefits. What do you guys think?

18:14 6th Aug 2012 - Link

Comparisons of the US & Ireland were a hot topic at BBQ today with an Irish crowd. Some areas of discussion: real estate, health/obesity...
